Today is letter C of the Blogging From A-Z Challenge and my theme, Atlantic Hurricanes. You can read more about my theme, here, and if you are a crafter, you can check out the blanket that I am crocheting that coincides with this challenge, here.
I’ve lived my entire life in the South, so I’ve been through my fair share of tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. For this challenge, I’m looking back on the storms that have impacted my life and some of the bigger more unforgettable storms.
You are probably thinking, why is Hurricane Isiais today’s letter C? Well, when the storm hit North Carolina back in 2020, we had a bit of a chuckle amid a year of misery when the Weather Channel posted the wrong name of where Isiais was supposed to hit. On the bottom of the television ticker, the Weather Channel wrote that ferries were taking people off of “Corncrake Island”, which locals quickly determined was supposed to read Ocracoke Island. {photo Island Free Press}
Immediately, this faux pas went viral and became the year’s meme in North Carolina, generating t-shirts and bumper stickers where all proceeds went to the relief effort of Ocracoke Island. I, of course, had to get one. The Weather Channel tried to correct their error, but it was too late. The damage was done.
