Coming Up With The Blogging From A-Z Challenge Theme
I have wanted to challenge myself and try my crochet hand at a temperature blanket for several years but have never committed to the project. It has been several years since I have crocheted a blanket for myself. The last blanket I crocheted was a zzz blanket for my cousin’s baby. This year was going to be my year, but when my home renovation projects all began in January, I couldn’t get myself pulled together enough to take on a huge project like a yearlong temperature blanket.
Once all the home projects were completed in March, I thought about starting a historical temperature blanket to celebrate my 50th birthday in August. But as I started to track the temperatures I realized most would be in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. That wasn’t going to make a very interesting temperature blanket. Still, I wanted something to commemorate my 50th birthday, so I decided to think a bit outside of the temperature blanket box.
I’ve lived my entire soon-to-be 50 years in the South. One thing a lot of people love about the South is the weather. It is warm a lot of the year, but it gets really hot in the summer. Unfortunately, with the summer heat comes the one thing all of us Southerners dread. . . Hurricanes.
2024 Challenge Theme Reveal: Hurricanes
Growing up in South Florida, you learn early on how to prepare for hurricane season. I remember in the ’70s and ’80s, the local TV stations and newspapers would run hurricane survival tips weeks before hurricane season, in preparation for “the big one”. Unfortunately, in August 1992, “the big one” finally hit South Florida. No matter how many TV shows and survival tips you have read over the years they never fully prepare you for “the big one”: a category 5 hurricane.
For this year’s Blogging from A-Z Challenge, I’ll be counting down hurricanes over the past 50 years that have either affected me personally or were historical storms. Join me on April 1, as I start with the hurricane that forever changed the way I view and prepare for storms. The only category 5 hurricane I’ve ever experienced, and hopefully the last.
50-Year Atlantic Hurricane Season “Temperature” Blanket
To coincide with this year’s Blogging from A-Z Challenge and my 50th birthday, I will begin crocheting a “temperature” blanket that tracks the past 50 years of the Atlantic hurricane season. My blanket will begin on June 22, 1974, and end at the conclusion of the 2024 hurricane season.
Check back on Saturday, March 30, a few days before the start of the A-Z Challenge for more details on the project, including the pattern I’ve chosen, the yarn and color palette, the storm list, and the project breakdown.
