Today is letter D of the Blogging From A-Z Challenge and my theme, Atlantic Hurricanes. You can read more about my theme, here, and if you are a crafter, you can check out the blanket that I am crocheting that coincides with this challenge, here.
I’ve lived my entire life in the South, so I’ve been through my fair share of tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. For this challenge, I’m looking back on the storms that have impacted my life and some of the bigger more unforgettable storms.
Today’s hurricane is the very first hurricane that I can remember. Hurricane David hit over the Labor Day weekend in 1979. I had just turned five and didn’t comprehend what was happening. All I remember was my family was all together and I got to play in the rain a lot before and after the storm. It was the ’70s. We did a lot of not-so-smart things back then.
For us in South Florida, Hurricane David hit as a category 2 storm, but for the people in the Dominican Republic, they felt the brunt of David. Hurricane David hit the capital of the Dominican Republic head-on as a category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 150 mph. The storm also caused massive flooding, resulting in most of the country’s 2,000 fatalities making Hurricane David one of the deadliest hurricanes in the modern era.
