Today is letter G of the Blogging From A-Z Challenge and my theme, Atlantic Hurricanes. You can read more about my theme, here, and if you are a crafter, you can check out the blanket that I am crocheting that coincides with this challenge, here.
I’ve lived my entire life in the South, so I’ve been through my fair share of tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. For this challenge, I’m looking back on the storms that have impacted my life and some of the bigger more unforgettable storms.
Gloria, you’re always on the run now
~ “Gloria” by Laura Branigan
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you’ve got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you’re headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it
This is what I remember about Hurricane Gloria. This storm hit in 1985, three years after the mega-hit song from Laura Branigan hit the radio stations. And while she never hit South Florida, our radio stations talked about this storm incessantly and played the heck out of it. I vividly remember the local radio station, Y-100, playing this song hourly for days before and after the storm. Now, every time I hear this song, I can’t help but think of Hurricane Gloria.
